Mākoņkalns

Apžvalgos vieta, Latgale

Rising 249 meters above sea level near the shore of Lake Rāzna, this hill once carried Volkenberg Castle, one of the earliest Livonian Order fortifications in Latgale, built starting in 1252 and destroyed during 14th- to 15th-century wars with Lithuania. Only fragments of the defensive wall and a collapsed underground passage remain today, alongside a 1938 memorial plate honoring Kārlis Ulmanis, Latvia's first head of state. A stairway leads to the summit, which opens onto views of Lake Rāzna and the smaller Ubagova Lake, within the protected Rāzna National Park established in 2007.
