Āraiši

Graži vieta, LV

Āraiši is a nationally significant archaeological site with the remains of a 9th-10th century Latgalian lake fortress settlement - the only one of 10 such settlements ever discovered in Latvia to have been reconstructed. Excavations uncovered the remains of 151 wooden buildings, about 3,700 artefacts, and hundreds of thousands of pottery fragments, with wet conditions preserving log structures up to seven layers high. Today visitors can see 14 reconstructed buildings from the settlement's first building phase, and a new visitor centre opened in 2020 with an interactive exhibition and original artefacts.
