Nemuno kilpų regioninis parkas was established in 1992 to protect the dramatic meanders the Nemunas River carves through central Lithuania around Birštonas and Punia. It covers roughly 25,171 hectares, about 69 percent of which is forest, and includes a strict nature reserve along with landscape, geomorphological, botanical, and archaeological reserves. The resort town of Birštonas and the village of Punia both lie within its boundaries.
