Freedom Square

Graži vieta, Kurzeme

Traders have gathered on this square beside Tukums's former Livonian Order castle since the 14th century, making it one of the city's oldest public spaces. It took the name Brīvības laukums (Freedom Square) in 1935, was renamed Red Square under Soviet rule with a Lenin monument erected in 1955, and then became the first place in Latvia where a Lenin statue was taken down, in spring 1990, after which it reclaimed its original name. A rebuilt section with a fountain opened in 1995 to mark 200 years since Tukums became a district town.
