Liepojos lake gamtos nature reserve

Vieta, Kurzeme

Spanning roughly 4,645 hectares across Liepāja city and the Dienvidkurzeme municipality, this nature reserve protects one of Latvia's largest mesotrophic lakes, an unusual water body supporting brackish-water plant communities alongside forests, meadows, and wetlands along its shore. Established in 1977 as an ornithological reserve, it has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2004 and is recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area, with over 100 bird species nesting there and dozens more using it during migration or wintering. Around 40 rare and protected plant species have also been recorded within its boundaries.
