Papio ornitologinis nature reserve

Vieta, Vilniaus apskritis

The Papis Ornithological Reserve protects 306.58 hectares of wetland around Lake Papis in the Baltosios Vokės area of Šalčininkai district. Established in 1992, it safeguards the shallow lake as a stopover site for migrating waterfowl and as breeding habitat for species such as the great bittern and marsh warbler. It forms part of the wider Baltosios Vokės wetland complex, a mix of an exploited and abandoned peat bog and wet meadows enclosed by large forest tracts, and is included in the Natura 2000 network. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the area in recent years, including several breeding pairs of Montagu's harrier.
