Mežaparks is a 26.2-hectare forest park on the left bank of the Daugava in Jēkabpils, next to the Radžu reservoir. Planting began in 1966, led by forest master S. Pujāts, to shield the city from dust and noise generated by a former dolomite quarry, using about 20 tree and shrub species including spruce, pine and Siberian stone pine. Development continued from 1986 under forest workers Jānis Lukstiņš and Dagnija Kalniņa, who added a nature trail with information panels on local trees and forest ecology, along with a fitness trail and a children's playground.
