Kazu iezis

Apžvalgos vieta, Vidzeme

Along the left bank of the Gauja River in Priekuļi parish, about a kilometer downstream from where the Rauna River flows in, a Devonian sandstone outcrop known as Kazu iezis stretches some 300 to 340 meters with walls up to 15 meters high and two distinct 16 meter peaks split by an old riverbed. The reddish and yellowish sandstone belongs to the Gauja Formation and shows visible cross lamination. Local legend gives it the alternate name Kāzu iezis, meaning Wedding Rock, after a farmhand and a poor girl who dressed as bride and groom and leapt from the cliff together.
