This reconstructed partisan bunker at the former homestead of Juozas Jakavonis-Tigras in Kasčiūnai village marks the wartime headquarters of Dainava district partisan commanders Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas and Juozas Vitkus-Kazimieraitis, used from January to March 1946. The original bunker, dug into a high bank of the Merkys river in 1945, was where the attack on Merkinė was planned and the underground newspaper Laisvės varpas was printed; the partisans destroyed it themselves in spring 1946. The memorial on the site was later rebuilt according to architect Gintaras Čaikauskas's design.
