Laukezers nature park covers 327 hectares in Kūku parish and protects the mesotrophic Laukezers lake, considered one of the clearest lakes in Latvia, along with the smaller Ildzenieku and Baltiņu lakes on either side of the Madona-Trepe ridge. It has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2004, safeguarding several EU-protected plant species, including great fen-sedge (Cladium mariscus), found at only three sites in eastern Latvia, and Thesium ebracteatum, found at only five sites in the whole country.
