Kartuvių kalnas

Apžvalgos vieta, Alytaus apskritis

Rising 21 meters near Aukštadvaris on the old road to Vilnius, this pine-covered hill (also known as Šibos kalnas) reaches 170 meters above sea level. Ethnologists trace its ominous name back to pagan times, when the site is said to have been used for sacrificial rites, and later local landowners reportedly used it to punish disobedient serfs. Local tradition also holds that several participants of the 1863 uprising against Russian rule were hanged here, giving the hill its lasting grim reputation in regional folklore.
