Karališkas park

Graži vieta, Marijampolės apskritis

Laid out in the late 19th century in the southwestern part of Kalvarija, this green space, once known as the Royal Garden (Karališkasis sodas), sits near the Šešupė River bridge on the road toward Suvalkija. It holds Lithuania's only monument to Mother Lithuania, erected in 1935, torn down and buried by Soviet authorities in 1950, then exhumed and restored in time for Mother's Day in 1989. Since 2018 an alley of memorial obelisks has honored local figures such as Mykolas Žilinskas and Mykolas Krupavičius, and stone sculptures from a 2010 sculptors' plein-air event stand on the opposite bank of the river.
