The Lithuanian Sea Museum grew out of a maritime exhibition first opened in 1971 within the Klaipėda Region Museum, and was established as its own institution in 1975. It opened to the public in 1979 inside Nerija Fort, a 19th-century coastal fortress in Smiltynė, as a combined maritime museum and aquarium. Its collection has grown from about 5,000 exhibits at opening to roughly 86,000 today, and it now also includes a dolphinarium, the ship-museum M52 "Sūduvis," a Baltic Sea animal rehabilitation centre, and an ethnographic fisherman's farmstead.
