Kryžius „Karavykas“

Graži vieta, Kauno apskritis

This double-armed cross, carved and donated by sculptor and folk artist Adolfas Teresius, greets visitors approaching the Šiluva shrine from the Tytuvėnai side. Its name comes from the Spanish town of Caravaca, and crosses of this type were traditionally believed to protect a place from plagues, epidemics and storms; they often carry a figure of Saint Roch, patron saint of the sick, who cared for plague victims in the 13th century.
