The "Dead Dunes," inside the Nagliai Nature Reserve on the Curonian Spit UNESCO World Heritage Site, take their name from several fishing villages buried by shifting sand in the 17th-18th centuries. Nineteenth-century reforestation and man-made windbreaks stabilised much of the surrounding sand, but the exposed grey and white dunes remain active, eroding by roughly 5 metres per decade. Only a marked 1.1 km boardwalk trail with observation decks and a lookout tower is open to visitors - the reserve itself is otherwise closed to protect it.
