Kaunas Reservoir Regional Park was established in 1992 to protect the landscape of the Kaunas Reservoir - Lithuania's largest artificial body of water, created in 1959 when the Nemunas River was dammed for the Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant. It covers 9,869 hectares, 53% water and 33.5% forest. The renowned Pažaislis Monastery and Church, a notable Baroque monument in Lithuania, stands on its shore. The park is a popular recreation and water-sports destination near Kaunas.
