Peiteli lake

Graži vieta, Latgale

Lake Peiteli (Peiteļa ezers, also known as Pītelis) lies in Līdumnieki parish, Ludza municipality, straddling the border between Latvia and Russia. It covers 3.47 square kilometres in total, of which 1.39 square kilometres lie within Latvia, with an oval basin averaging 1.3 metres deep and reaching 2.2 metres at its deepest point. Shores are mostly low and peat-rich with a sandy stretch to the east, and the lake supports reeds, sedges and water lilies along with pike, crucian carp, roach, perch, ide and burbot. It is first documented in the 1599 Livonian land survey as belonging to Ludza Castle, and the ancient hillfort site Peiteļu pilskalns stands on its western shore.
