Rainio park

Graži vieta, Kurzeme

Covering 15.5 hectares between Brīvības and Zemnieku streets, this landscape park began as a drained alder marsh in the 1840s, developed alongside the new Liepāja-Grobiņa highway, and was known simply as Jaunliepāja Park until it was renamed in 1925 to honor the poet Rainis. Birches, lindens, chestnuts, and black alders line a winding canal and a small pond with an island in the park's southern section, alongside a children's playground and a fenced football pitch. The park is also a site of wartime tragedy: on 29 June 1941, in the first days of the German occupation, roughly 300 Jewish residents and other victims were shot in anti-tank trenches here, a history marked today by a memorial.
