Vecpiebalgas manor

Graži vieta, Vidzeme

Vecpiebalga manor stands in Ineši, about 5 km south of Vecpiebalga, its current neoclassical palace built in 1786 for the Sheremetev family on the site of a manor first recorded in the 16th century. Burned during the 1905 unrest, it was rebuilt by 1909 and is set within a landscape park of exotic trees and shrubs; it also served as the model for Slātava manor in the classic Latvian novel "Mērnieku laiki". Today its wine cellar houses the Piebalga regional history museum, founded in 1992, while the main building holds local government offices, a library and a cultural center.
