Ļubasts is a Natura 2000 reserve established in 2004 around a shallow, ultra-eutrophic lake in the Daugavpils district, created chiefly to protect a breeding population of the black tern. A 1967 drainage canal cut the lake's outlet and dropped its water level, shrinking it from 59 to about 27 hectares.
