Kempingas, Šiaulių apskritis

This is the visitor rest facility at the entrance to the Hill of Crosses, one of Lithuania's best-known pilgrimage sites. The first crosses are believed to date from after the 1831 anti-Tsarist uprising; their number grew from roughly 130 in 1900 to over 100,000 by 2006, despite the Soviet authorities bulldozing the hill at least three times between 1944 and 1990 - crosses kept reappearing overnight as an act of quiet defiance. Pope John Paul II visited the hill in 1993, and Lithuanian cross-crafting is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
