Medvėgalis hillfort is the highest peak of the Samogitian Upland, rising over 234 m above sea level, and the highest hillfort in Lithuania. First mentioned in 1316, it was the key stronghold defending Samogitia against the Teutonic Order - around 20 Order raids targeted the fort, and in 1329 a combined Teutonic and Bohemian army under King John of Luxembourg overcame 6,000 defenders.
